Joyce Baker, Mentor Director

-(B.S. from Kansas State University and M. Ed. from Southwest Texas State University)
Joyce comes to the Seedling Foundation with thirty years of experience in public education. Her interest in serving children with socioeconomic disadvantages developed following college graduation in her role as co-director of a federally funded program promoting nutritional education in urban neighborhoods. Through this moving experience, she discovered early the importance of authenticity and trusting relationships. After beginning her teaching career in North Kansas City, Missouri, she continued as an elementary and middle school teacher in Round Rock ISD. During this tenure, she became certified as a New Jersey Writing Project in Texas trainer and taught 10 writing institutes for teachers in Central Texas. She also presented at state conferences and was named a judge/evaluator for the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards at the University of Pittsburg and in Chicago, Illinois.
Upon completion of her master’s degree, she served six years as an assistant principal in AISD. In this position, her eyes and heart were opened again to the specific needs of disadvantaged students. As a Region X educational consultant, she imparted “best practices” to support at-risk students and in the summer of 2008, she joined Breakthrough Austin. This experience cemented her desire to be actively involved in a mentoring program that provides resources and assistance for children to reach their full potential. She found such a program in the Seedling Foundation and is excited to be a member of its talented team.
Joyce has a son and a daughter who are happily married to their soul mates and is the grandmother of two precious little boys.

From 2004-2008 she served as the Positive Behavior Support Coach in Austin ISD at eleven schools until her retirement in June 2008. This experience taught her how powerful mentoring is in the life of a child.
