Ms. Sylvia Acevedo - President and CEO of CommuniCard ™ LLC

Acevedo, a bi-lingual industrial engineer, grew up as a first-generation American in a Spanish-speaking home. She saw the need for a product that would cross languages and aid in communication. Her creation, CommuniCards, have been developed to effectively reduce the language barrier between Spanish and English.  CommuniCards require no translators, reference books or knowledge of pronunciation.  Acevedo also developed CommuniCards for police departments to use during traffic stops.  Ms. Acevedo was recently selected as the Hispanic Business Woman of the Year for the 2004 Hispanic Leadership and Business Excellence Awards by the United States Hispanic Chamber of Commerce (USHCC) for Region III.  Most recently, she was named to the Executive Board of the Ann Richards School for Young Women Leaders.

This innovative and highly successful program was featured in an award-winning documentary called Troop 1500 which broadcast on PBS nationally to over 800,000 viewers in March 2006. As well as raising awareness about the challenges facing the children of incarcerated parents and taking a holistic view to address them, 96 percent of the girls in Troop 1500 have stayed in school, and 98 percent have stayed out of the penal system.

Prior to joining the Girl Scouts, Ms. Cuba worked for seven different agencies that focused on a variety of different women’s issues, including as a counselor for women who ended up in hospital emergency rooks after they had been raped.
